It was the name of the Roman goddess of victory, the equivalent of the Greek Nike. The most famous bearer is undoubtedly Queen Victoria, whose long reign (1837–1901) saw the expansion of the British Empire and gave rise to the term "Victorian." Her name also graces Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, Canada, and Victoria Falls in Africa. Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, was also named for her. A notable variant is the Scottish form Victoire, which shares the same triumphant root. Intriguingly, the name was relatively rare in Scotland before the Queen ascended the throne.
