Reo
Boy name · 99 babies recorded · 1974–2025
Reo is a name with multiple origins, most notably from Japanese where it can mean “fierce” or “cold” depending on the kanji used, and from Māori where it means “voice” or “language”. For English and Scottish speakers, its most recognisable bearer is Reo Hatate, the Japanese footballer who joined Celtic in 2022 and quickly became a fan favourite at Parkhead. The name also appears as a place name in the United States – Reo, Indiana – though that settlement shares no direct etymological link. As a further note, Reo is used for both boys and girls in Japan, but in Scotland it has been given almost exclusively to boys since its first recorded appearance there in the 2000s.
