Keiran
Boy name · 921 babies recorded · 1974–2025
Keiran: 921 babies born in Scotland since 1974, given to boys, peaking at 61 births in 1995.
Keiran is the Scottish and Irish Gaelic form of Ciarán, meaning 'little dark one' from *ciar* (dark), traditionally given to children with dark hair or complexions. The name was borne by several early Irish saints, most notably St Ciarán of Clonmacnoise, a sixth-century monastic founder. In modern times, it belongs to Scottish actor Keiran Bewley, known for his work in the hit show *Outlander*, and to footballer Keiran Agard-Mace. Although often seen as a variant of the more common Kieran, the spelling with an 'e' instead of an 'i' has steadily grown in popularity across Scotland. The name shares its root with the Irish county of Ciarraí (Kerry), whose name derives from the same clan ancestry.
